My goal with Turtle Dance Music and with AutismFriendlyShows.Com is to create a deeply empathetic audience. An audience that goes beyond, "That's weird" to "That could be useful" and finally to "Wow, that is super useful. I can't believe that hasn't existed before!" My goal is to create an audience that can find value in other people beyond what is presented on the surface. I want people to be more empathetic. Why? Loneliness and isolation are deeply uncomfortable feelings. Sure, there are times when you want to be alone. Times when you want to read a book that you are looking forward to reading in a comfy chair or in the library. Times when you want to sit and meditate. Times when you want to go for a run by yourself/work-out and listen to your music/book and just jam out/get rid of bad energy/find new energy.
But there are times when one does not want to be alone and they are. A Friday night after a hectic work week and you need to blow off steam. Stranded on the highway with a flat tire in the rain. You just finished your work but everybody else in the house is asleep. You worked so fast so you could get some quality time with your family. Now there is no time and none of your friends or family members are up to hang out. How can we create more time? How could we incorporate learning into our everyday routines? How could we create more quality time with our families? How can we learn through play?
Why is learning through play important? Taking crayons out of a box and drawing on a white sheet of paper is play. Picking up a guitar and strumming the first chord with a blank sheet of paper in front of you to write a song is play. Being with a room of parents and kids at a Maker Faire with a bunch of boxes that you will cut up and erect into a model "box city" is learning through play. Maybe the idea is something like "social learning through play?" How can we socialize and learn through play? Nobody should have to live alone and everyone should have access to profound thinking and other people.
Profound thinking is my best friend when I am alone and I do not want to be. I love seeing the world in new ways. I love looking at a pond and seeing all the ducks and swans swimming by the edge of the water. I love going for a run, listening to my music and imagining what the world could be. My goal is to create new and exciting work during our performances and shows. In front of the audience. I want to solve America's loneliness problem. I want more Americans to collaborate with one another. I want there to be tension. I want more people to feel comfortable blending categories.
